Wysteria levers him about it, and they are suddenly in a markedly more narrow landing leading into a very narrow twisting staircase. Once upon a time, this was likely some back way by which all sorts of atrocities in the fortress might be reached more quickly. Today, it apparently represents a different kind of shortcut as Wysteria stops them here at the top of the stairwell rather than leading them down it. Nonetheless, they are out of easy line of sight.
